History

Delhi had water drainage systems, was installed in Delhi’s roads, highways, streets, government buildings & other places, which was installed in 1976. This was based on a master plan draft designed for smaller population and rain around 6 million population and 50mm rainfall. This master plan of drainage system was very useful at that particular period. However, As the time was going, the population was rapidly increased & variation in rainfall occurred due to which this plan became less effective & efficient.

Population of Delhi has grown rapidly since 1976 and rainfall patterns have also variated. The current drainage system fails to cope up with increased water level and which leading to frequent waterlogging and flooding.

The drainage system is managed by multiple authorities which including the Municipal Corporations, PWD, DSI IDC, DDA, and the I&FC department which makes complex to upgrades and maintenance.

Current problem

People face many problems due to rainwater blockage. Rainwater blockage can lead to a variety of problem which including flooding, sewer backups, and property damage. Blocked drains, whether from debris or tree roots, can also exacerbate these issues, leading to sewage backups and potential health hazards. Vehicles are drowning underwater. Overhead bridges and underpasses are full of water, which causes difficulties in transportation, and also causes health issues. Soil along with rain water made streets and roads muddy which cause problem in walking.
